Geography undergraduate courses achieve accreditation from the Royal Geographical Society

We are pleased to share that BA Geography and BSc Geography at the University of Southampton are now accredited by the Royal Geographical Society and the Institute of British Geographers (RGS-IBG).

Our courses are joining the 50% of university geography courses across the UK that are accredited, ensuring that Southampton is recognised as a high quality centre for teaching geography.

The Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) was founded in 1830 as the UK's learned society and professional body for geography. They are committed to advancing geography and supporting its practitioners at an international level.

Launched last year, the accreditation gives prospective geography students a way to check whether their chosen university delivers the knowledge, skills and other attributes that are expected of high quality geography graduates, as set out in the QAA's Geography Subject Benchmark Statement. Given that the knowledge and understanding acquired throughout a geography degree are held in high regard by employers, students can be encouraged that accredited courses have been independently verified by an experienced professional body.
