International Geography and Environmental Science postgraduate applicants can get financial support for an innovative Southampton degree that provides students with the knowledge to tackle key societal and environmental issues.

The prestigious Dean of Environmental and Life Science’s International Scholarship allows postgraduate students from outside the UK and EU to get financial help to study the Master of Science in Applied Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing (AGISRS).

This exciting, interdisciplinary degree combines remote sensing and spatial analysis to explore how computer technology can be used to apply geographical knowledge to address real world problems in diverse areas such as public health, food security and in improving our understanding of the carbon cycle. Our students learn novel techniques and apply them to problems relevant to their specialist interests.

The MSc provides strong external links across the world, offers students the opportunity to develop skills in up to two computer programming languages, and opens doors to a wide range of successful careers in environmental consultancy firms, software companies, government research institutes and postgraduates research degrees.

The Dean of Environmental and Life Sciences Professor Rachel Mills said: “We introduced this scholarship in recognition of this programme’s contribution to tackling some of our most important global challenges. We really value the high calibre of international students that this MSc AGISRS attracts, and the experience and diversity that they bring to the wider University community.”

MSc AGISRS Programme Lead Dr Gareth Roberts said: “The financial help this scholarship provides can make the difference between students being able to undertake the programme or not. It offers successful students a £3,000 reduction in their tuition costs and is automatically awarded to international students who gain a 2:1 equivalent grade or above in their undergraduate degree and who are not receiving a full or partial scholarship from another source other than Southampton.”

This is the third year that this prestigious scholarship has been offered and current Dean’s scholars are clear that this scholarship has enabled them to thrive during their studies at Southampton and will enhance their post study opportunities.

Gabriel Rodriguez Rojas said: “I came to Southampton after gaining my BSc in Environmental Studies at the University of Puerto Rico, as I wanted to have a different perspective on an educational system and because Southampton offered programming for both geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing.

“Receiving the scholarship helped me with my tuition costs and eased my worries a bit; and was another reason I decided to choose Southampton.”

Fellow student Ruizhe Han, who studied his degree in Earth Information Science and Technology at the China University of Geosciences, added: “Tuition costs in the UK are not cheap, so if international students can get scholarships it is a good thing and lightens the burden. I liked this degree programme because I wanted to go into GIS applications and remote sensing image processing and not just mapping, and this course offers both of those.”

MSc AGISRS students who have a first class undergraduate degree are also eligible to access the University’s Merit Scholarship of £3,000, leading to a potential combined £6,000 reduction in tuition fees.

I can confidently say that MSc Applied GIS and Remote Sensing at Southampton, stands out globally. Several schools tend to focus on theories. At Southampton, we do practicals and technical assignments as much as theory. This ensures that we are able to fit into any environment that we find ourselves in; whether industry or academia.
