The School of Geography and Environmental Science’s reputation for world-leading and impactful research has been strengthened this month with the publication of the National Research Excellence Framework 2021 results.

Within the Geography and Environmental Studies Unit of Assessment, our world-leading position was confirmed with our School:

  • Ranked joint third in geography and environmental studies nationally in terms of grade point average (GPA, which measures overall research quality)
  • 75% of our impact case studies rated as world-leading
  • 75% of our working environment rated world-leading and the remainder rated internationally excellent
  • 94% of our research outputs regarded as world-leading or internationally excellent

Prof. Jim Wright, Deputy Head of School for Research, commented: “We are absolutely delighted with this recognition of the hard work and innovation of our staff and the value that the assessment panel placed on our long-standing relationships with the organisations that work with us around the world.  Since the last research assessment exercise, far more of our research outputs have international co-authors and we have more international staff. It’s exciting to see how these colleagues have helped make our work relevant not only in the UK but beyond.”

Prof. Justin Sheffield commented: “We’re finding that our research really does translate through into our degree programmes.  For example, several of our REF2021 impact case studies and a great many of our submitted research outputs related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  When we audited our school’s module content recently, we found an average of 4.1 goals were covered per module.”
