Geography Seminar

This seminar explores issues associated with the production of temporary population statistics. The production of estimates is complex due to variability in the dynamics of mobility driving short-term shifts in population numbers, a lack of clarity with respect to user needs, and limited conceptual development. In this paper, we utilise the framework for official statistics developed by Raymer et al (2015), with the goal of developing a consistent conceptual basis for temporary population statistics. We explore the spatiotemporal dynamics of various forms of temporary population mobility and their impacts on population stocks. We report the results of a survey of Australian government officials and planners on their requirements for temporary population statistics before examining existing published outputs in OECD countries. We conclude by proposing a conceptual basis for temporary population statistics and illustrate this using a combination of conventional census and survey data along with data sets including Twitter, Facebook and Airbnb.
