Geography and Environmental Science Seminar

Andean forests have an invaluable role for biodiversity and human livelihoods in South America. They are critically degraded and efforts to restore these high elevation forests are proliferating across the Andes as part of the 30x30 initiative. However, knowledge on the socio-economic and governance conditions that determine success of ecological restoration are scarce. Most restoration projects happen in marginalised communities, and often inaccessible locations, bringing with them a host of challenges.

This talk will explore motivations, success factors and preferences for effective ecological restoration in the Peruvian Andes using 75 interviews with 4 stakeholder groups of 11 restoration sites. I will present some of my key findings centred on the importance of hydrological services of Andean forest, on community governance models to achieve long-term restoration and on future restoration priorities and directions. I will conclude the talk with a new framework for a ‘Mountain Landscape Restoration Approach’ which considers the socio-ecological systems connections and recommends landscape-scale restoration interventions in line with stakeholder preferences.
