Joanna Wilkin is a Postgraduate research student within Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Southampton

Main interests include humanitarian applications of GIS and remote sensing, data for development, and the crowdsourcing of open geographic information.

Academic history

2008 – 2011: BA Geography (First Class Honours), St. Peter’s College, University Of Oxford

Dissertation: The commercialisation of microfinance in Bangladesh: BRAC, an NGO case study

2012 – 2013: MSc Geographical Information Management, Cranfield University

Projects included determining new methods for the classification of false colour imagery into land cover classes, as well as building an urban environment quality index for 3D city modelling.


Work Experience

Jo has a background in humanitarian mapping and spatial analysis, having previously worked with the British Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières as a GIS analyst. She has also helped establish the Missing Maps Project in London (and now Southampton), which encourages people to help “put the most vulnerable people on the map” by mapping crisis or disaster-prone areas onto Openstreetmap.

Humanitarian mapping, disaster response, community resilience, spatial data analysis, social networks

PhD Research Project:

Mapping community resilience: using Call Detail Records to explore the role of social networks in the response and recovery of communities to natural disasters.
