Ms Ruth Buckley-Salmon is a postgraduate research student within the faculty of Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Southampton.

Tackling climate change, one person at a time

After many years working in investment banks and management consultancies, I stumbled into politics and became a Green City Councillor, and later Deputy Leader of the Council. During this time, I campaigned on a number of issues relating to inequality and the environment and led several high-profile campaigns.

My passion for the environment continued through my MSc, from which I won the university’s environmental award for 2017.

Research interests

My research interests are how ‘we’ affect mass behaviour change for societal benefit.

For my MSc dissertation, I looked into a social marketing and behavioural economics  approach using a values lens, for nationwide meat reduction.

My PhD research extends this field to look at how we can ‘sell’ the idea of reduced consumption policies to the government to help achieve GHG reduction.

The aim of my research is to be able to provide a framework of policies that interlink business, government and society to help acheive the Paris Agreement’s 2030 GHG targets.
