Miss Sofia Aldabet BSc, MSc

Postgraduate research student

I am a Spanish geographer trained in GIS and urban planning, and have always been interested in natural hazards – particularly those that affect coastal areas.

I hold a 5-year degree in Geography (University of Santiago de Compostela), an MSc in Urban Planning and Environmental Management (University of Barcelona) and a postgraduate degree in Applied Climatology (University of Barcelona). In 2017, I joined an MSc in Geographical Information Systems at Lund University (Sweden).

I have worked in an environmental consulting company in Barcelona, and as a research assistant in an ERC Advanced Grant Project hosted at the Centre for Demographic Studies in the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

In 2018 I began my PhD project at the University of Southampton, which explores the dynamic relationships between coastal risk and coastal protection in the UK and abroad.

Title:“Emergent relationships between coastal risk and coastal protection.”

Supervisors: Dr Eli Lazarus, Prof Robert Nicholls. With the support of GeoData and the Channel Coastal Observatory (CCO).

Summary: The project aim is to analyse interactions between the different components of coastal risk (hazard, exposure and vulnerability) in the UK and abroad, relating the implementation of coastal defences with spatial and temporal patterns in coastal development and geomorphologic change. Research on the different feedbacks that emerge over time from these relationships may help to better understand and prevent their unintended consequences.
