ES student Jenny Warhurst spent her summer in the UK getting 9 weeks of work experience to add to her CV. Jenny shares her summer work placement experience below.
"The first was for 4 week at University of Nottingham Geography Department. I Assisted with field data collection and laboratory analysis for an ongoing study at Attenborough Nature Reserve, Nottinghamshire. I then went on to microscopically identifying lake plankton from Greenland, for which some of my research was presented at INQUA, a global conference, and a paper on the findings will hopefully be published. Whilst at Nottingham I also helped and taught at several outreach student events at the university which improved my adaptive ability to changing situations.
"My second piece of work experience was for someone you may well know, I worked from home for Ian Williams, from the University of Southampton's Faculty of Engineering and the Environment. I over the period of 5 weeks compiled PowerPoint presentations, handouts and a sewage treatment process short film for the University's Environmental Pollution module.
"Although my summer was somewhat work filled, with the 9 weeks of work experience detailed above and also, working most Sundays at my local swimming pool, I still managed a great deal of fun within and outside my work experience. I pulled in a holiday at the start and end of the vacation period, and managed to successfully complete the UK "Three Peaks Challenge", raising, as part of a team, in excess of £1,000 for CLIC Sargent, a children's cancer charity."
