"My placement was with Oil Spill Response Limited who have employed several of our graduates in recent years. They are and international organisation, located in Southampton docks and respond to oil spills on a global basis, 24/7. For example their team recovered oil from the Deep Water Horizon well blow-out in 2010. Whilst with them I worked with the emergency response team to conduct an oil spill drill. This involved computer modelling of oil spills, working with recovery equipment such as boom, dispersants and skimmers, and even going out on the company vessel into Southampton Water to practice containing a shipping spill. It was loads of fun, really hands on and an invaluable insight into the logistics behind dealing with pollution incidents."
