Cross-sectional study

The aim of this study was to collect blood samples from a large number of elite athletes from differing ethnic groups and different sports in order to establish physiological reference ranges of IGF-I and P-III-NP amongst elite athletes. This information was used to help determine the decision limits used in the final anti-doping strategy.

Elite athletes were invited from any ethnic group. A wide range of sports were covered internationally.

This study is now complete and the results from this study have been published in Clinical Endocrinology in 2009 (1).

We also examined marker concentrations in adolescent athletes in order to determine whether changes in the application of the test were need in athletes aged under 18 years. This study is now complete and the results from this study have been published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (2).
