Statement from UK Sport

UK Sport logo

The responsibility for coordinating the global fight against doping in sport lies with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). UK Sport is the National Anti-Doping Organisation (NADO) coordinating the fight within the UK. Supported by the world-class facilities at the Drug Control Centre (DCC), King’s College, London and the strong commitment from Government, UK Sport operates a comprehensive detection and prevention programme across more than 40 sports.

UK Sport is committed to doing everything in its power to maintain the integrity of sport and has been involved in addressing the challenge of detecting growth hormone for a number of years. This involvement increased in November 2006 when becoming directly involved in the GH-2004 project. Any gap in our testing armoury obviously concerns us as it damages our ability to tackle doping in sport. As such, to be actively involved in a research project in partnership with the GH-2004 team at Southampton University and the WADA-accredited laboratory at King’s College looking specifically at developing a suitable robust method of detection for growth hormone is of real importance and invaluable in continuing the drive to combat doping in sport.
