Professor Marie-Louise Newell’s NIH-funded project aims to study HIV infection and treatment in pregnancy, and its impact on pregnancy, and the fetal immune environment

The project involves the enrolment of over 500 HIV-infected pregnant women from the Gugulethu clinic in Cape Town.

Professor Newell visited her colleagues at the University of Cape Town in both October and November 2015 to work  on the project. The women studied are enrolled before the twentieth week of their pregnancy, and will t hen be folled up throughout pregnancy, delivery and up to six months postpartum. Enrolment started in April 2015, and will continue until late 2016, with the project follow up due to complete in early 2018. Prof Newell’s co-investigators are Prof Landon Myer and Prof Clive Gray at the University of Cape Town, Prof Thumbi N’Dungu at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and Prof Marcus Altfeld at Hamburg University.
