Exploring commonalities in Global Health Research

The second GHRI external stakeholders workshop on the 16th of June involved about 50 participants from various Faculties, who listened to six external speakers. After a morning of presentations, the afternoon focussed on preparing outlines of research interests and possible projects, with a view to developing these further for funding applications.

The GHRI was represented by four of its Interest Groups: Nutrition and development; Infections; Population Health and Right to Health.

Under the banner of Nutrition and development, there were two presentations:

Professor Nahla Houalla, Dean, Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, University of Beirut: ‘Public Health Nutrition Research in the Middle East and in particular, Lebanon.’

Dr Rihlat Said Mohamed, Research Fellow, Developmental Pathways for Health Research Unit, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa: ‘A holistic approach to nutrition and development’

For Infections:

Professor Antonio Luiz Ribeiro, Head of Research and Innovation, Hospital das Clínicas, UFMG, Brazil: 'Current challenges to healthcare in Brazil.'

Professor Osman Sankoh, Executive Director, INDEPTH Network: 'The role of health and demographic surveillance systems in global health research.'

Professor Allen Wu, Director, Centre for Public Health Research, Nanjing University: ‘HIV-1 and STDs in a rapidly transforming China: Challenges to disease prevention’

and for Right to Health/Governance/Ethics

Professor Lisa Forman, Assistant Professor, Social & Behavioural Health Sciences Division, Office of Global Public Health Education & Training, Toronto: ‘The right to health, and global health policy.’
