Cindy Brooks is a Research Fellow and Medical Sociologist at the School of Health Sciences. Cindy has a background in Sociology with significant research experience and expertise in qualitative methods.

Cindy’s research interests are combining sociological theory with qualitative and mixed methods research to address health and social care inequalities and improve the experiences of patients, their families and health and social care professionals.

Applying sociological theory with health research is key to addressing health and social inequalities and improving the healthcare experiences of patients, their families and all those involved in their care

Cindy Brooks joined the School of Health Sciences in January 2017. She has substantial experience of leading and contributing to health and social care research and is passionate about using innovative research methods and approaches to address areas of health and social enquiry.

Cindy is leading medicine optimisation research projects in the areas of addressing inappropriate polypharmacy and exploring the experiences of patients and healthcare professionals in using electronic repeat dispensing (eRD) services in Wessex, as well as an international study exploring the relationship between art, health and wellbeing.

As a Research Fellow within the ARC Wessex Implementation Team, Cindy’s role also involves research activities to enable the successful development and operationalisation of innovations in practice. Cindy is also a committee member for Athena Swan in the School of Health Sciences.

Previous projects Cindy has been involved in include a mixed method research and evaluation study to improve the delivery of nutrition and hydration to people living with dementia in the community (funded by the Burdett Trust, Bournemouth University), leading to the design of an innovative person-centred nutritional and hydration model. Research findings formed the basis of an education and training tool delivered to care staff via workshops, workbooks and a YouTube video. Cindy has also been involved in a study exploring the experiences of women aged 70 years and older living with breast cancer (funded by Macmillan, University of Southampton) and exploring the experiences of patients’, carers’ and professionals’ experience of cancer of unknown primary site (funded by Dimbleby Cancer Care, University of Southampton).

Current research:

Leading projects relating to polypharmacy, electronic repeat dispensing services and an international and a local study on art, wellbeing and health.

Creating Learning Environments for Compassionate Care (CLECC) in mental health settings: an implementation study.

Co-leading a rapid insight case study of remote patient consultations in Wessex in response to COVID-19.

Rapid evidence synthesis on rehabilitation and COVID-19, deconditioning since the onset of the pandemic, frailty, multidisciplinary teams and the community.
