Dr Crissi Gallagher is currently a lecturer in Occupational Therapy and works as part of this innovative and creative programme team at Southampton University. As a clinician she worked primarily in adult mental health, though her work in teaching undergraduates has involved her in leading many professional specific and inter-professional learning modules predominantly in the area of reflective practice, and continuous professional development.

I am definitely a team player with a very long standing passion for learning, facilitating learning in others and shared learning across inter-professional groups.

Her long term research interest and experience in shared learning underpins all her teaching activities, which include co-ordinating the AHP Educator Development for practitioners who work with Southampton students in practice settings. She also acts as joint programme lead for the multi-professional Assessment of Learning in Practice Programme which was validated in 2013. This involves an ever increasing number of different professions in learning how to facilitate learners in practice settings. This is an exciting area of teaching due to the challenges faced by health care professionals who work in the every changing world of health care.

Dr Gallagher has wide experience of curriculum development and learning and teaching philosophy and is active proponent for the use of e learning alongside more traditional methods. Each year she sets herself one new challenge that looks at improving the learning experience for learners to ensure that she keeps up to date with new developments in education. The current focus of her work is using personal and professional portfolios to promote and enhance links between theory and practice, and enabling Occupational Therapy undergraduates to ‘think outside the box’ when evaluating and researching their professional practice.
