David Wright is Senior Research Fellow at the Macmillan Survivorship Research Group (MSRG). David’s research interests include the long term psychosocial impact of cancer and its treatment on health and wellbeing, and evaluations of personalised care service innovations.

With more people diagnosed with cancer surviving their disease, we must understand the consequences of survival and ensure people affected by cancer get the right support at the right time in the right way.

He joined the Macmillan Survivorship Research Group (MSRG) in March 2019 after working as an independent researcher and evaluator, delivering a range of projects for national and international agencies including the Wessex Institute (University of Southampton), the European Commission and the Stroke Association. During this time, David was co-investigator on a Health Foundation funded study exploring the skills frontline NHS staff use to deliver quality improvement projects. From this, he has developed a particular interest in service design and quality improvement.

David previously worked for five years at the former Macmillan Research Unit (University of Southampton) where he led the Macmillan Listening Study – a national research prioritisation exercise involving people affected by cancer. This identified the impact of cancer on everyday life as the top priority, a finding that influenced the cancer survivorship agenda nationally and internationally.

David leads the evaluation programme for the MSRG, delivering a suite of evaluations on personalised care service innovations. He also supports HORIZONS, a large cohort study exploring the recovery of health and well-being in adults diagnosed with cancer. David is a member of the British Psychosocial Oncology Society.
