Dr Eloise Monger PhD BSc(Hons) RGN FHEA

Eloise is an Intensive Care Nurse by background. As well as teaching Critical Care and Research methods topics across the Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes, she is Programme Lead for the MSC/PGDip in Nursing. Her research interests focus on the use of Simulation in healthcare education, Video Analysis, and the development of technology/web science applications in Health Sciences. Her PhD was affiliated to the Institute of Web Science.

Technology affords society the opportunity to enhance our knowledge and understanding of complex phenomena in new ways. In Health Sciences, we are developing methods to better understand the use of these technologies to improve the education of future healthcare professionals and thereby the care of the people/patients they work with.

Following a clinical career in Intensive Care Nursing, Eloise moved to the University of Southampton in 2001 to teach the Post-qualifying Intensive care course and undertake her PhD. She was the first nurse to be awarded a PhD affiliated to the Institute of Web Science. She is an NMC Registered Nurse Teacher and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Research interests

Eloise’s research interests are focussed in the use of technology in healthcare and healthcare education. She has collaborated on several projects with the  German Institute for Artificial Intelligence researching the use of Smart watches, GoogleGlass and HoloLens applications for nurse education. She leads a cross Faculty initative to develop the use of Virtual Reality resources for healthcare education.

PhD supervision

Eloise supervises PhD students using predominantly mixed methods to undertake research  in emergency and critical care environments: focussing on areas such as  resuscitation, trauma assessment, competence acquisition.
