Mrs Mary Louise Fry MSc, BSc (Hons)

Mary is a Senior Public Health Specialist with over 15 years experience in the NHS. In November 2015 Mary commenced her current role as Project Manager with the University of Southampton.

The Arthritis Research UK Internship Scheme for Allied Health Professionals and Nurses is a prestigious National scheme and recruits high-achieving newly graduated interns. A widespread network of world leading researchers is opened up to successful applicants. Past interns have benefitted from a more rapid clinical research career progression than their peers. The benefits of linking research with clinical experience is invaluable to ensure people with arthritis receive the best care possible.

Throughout Mary's career, successful Project Management has been a key component of all her roles. As Obesity Prevention Lead for New Forest PCT she was responsible for the writing and implementation of the Obesity Prevention Strategy 2004-6 – working with a wide network of collaborative partners. As Health Promotion Locality Manager (Cancers and Smoking Lead) she was responsible for the district-wide Smoking Cessation Service “Quitters”. Throughout her career she has held accountability for meeting national and local public health targets through the delivery of evidence-based projects. She has delivered high quality training to GPs, nurses and other health professionals. She has influenced and negotiated policy with widespread multi-agency stakeholders at a local, regional and national level and secured funding for a variety of projects. A key part of her public health work has been disseminating the latest research through written publications as well as radio and television interviews. She received a Highly Commended Award from the Health Education Authority for the development of skin cancer prevention resources for school children in 2001.

Prior to starting her role as Project Manager for the University of Southampton in November 2015, Mary worked in a Health Advisory role for BUPA Wellness at the Spire Hospital in Southampton.

She previously worked for the University of Southampton in 1996/7 as a Health Education Consultant producing and disseminating a distance-learning courses for post-graduate nurses across Europe (Europe Against Cancer). She is thrilled to be working for the University again in the world-renowned Health Sciences department on such a prestigious national project.

Research interests

 

Throughout her public health career it has been crucial that Mary ensured all work was underpinned by the latest evidence-based research. Effective evaluation of all initiatives and projects using qualitative and quantitative methodology was a key component of the project management process.

Mary's Public Health MSc dissertation examined the “Health Behaviours of Health Promotion Staff: do they practice what they preach?”

Mary is responsible for ensuring that all of the key milestones and targets are met within the remit of the Arthritis Research UK Internship Project. This includes ensuring that all of the research placements undertaken by the interns are underpinned by sound public health principles.

Conferences

Mary has a key role in delivering a comprehensive training programme to the interns over their eight week research placements. In her role as a Public Health Specialist Mary delivered high-quality training to a number of health professionals within the local Health economy. These included topics such as effective smoking cessation techniques, cancer prevention initiatives and obesity management issues – and were delivered to GPs, nurses and other health professionals and community workers.
