I am interested in maximising the quality of life of people with cancer and their loved ones throughout the cancer journey

After graduating from Cambridge University with a natural sciences degree in experimental psychology, I spent many years working at the Autism Research Centre in Cambridge with Professor Simon Baron-Cohen on a wide variety of projects. In 2010, a move to the South Coast led to a change in career direction when I joined the Medicine at the University of Southampton. I co-ordinated the development and validation of quality of life instruments, funded by the European Organisation for the Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) and also embarked on a PhD. My PhD focussed on the development and preliminary testing of a small group psychoeducational intervention for patients with cancer cachexia and their carers.

Research interests

I joined the Macmillan Survivorship Research Group in Health Sciences in February 2017 to work on the Colorectal Wellbeing (CREW) Study. This study is producing a large, rich data set about the long term recovery of health and well-being following treatment for colorectal cancer.

Other projects

An international field study for the reliability and validity of the EORTC cancer cachexia module (the EORTC QLQ-CAX24) and the EORTC QLQ-C30 for assessing quality of life in cancer patients with cachexia
