Southampton was my first choice of University due to its Russell group status and the high level of teaching provided by world renowned lecturers in the field.

Why did you want to study podiatry?

I chose to study podiatry after shadowing a friend of mine in his clinic. Previous to that I knew little of the profession, but I was amazed by the breadth of cases that walked through his surgery. After that week, I knew that being a podiatrist was the career for me.

Why did you choose to come and study at Southampton?

Southampton was my first choice of University due to its Russell group status and the high level of teaching provided by world renowned lecturers in the field. Moreover I grew an instant liking to the campus and Southampton during my open day visit.

What were your Southampton ‘highlights’?

My best experiences of Southampton was making and spending time with lifelong friends and taking part in social and sporting events throughout my time at the university.

What other activities did you take part in while at University?

I made the most of my free time at the university by joining the Rugby club and Boxing team. As well as being a committee on the latter, I also joined the committee team on the Allied Health Society, which included Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist, to unite the different professions and help set up mentor systems between the first year and final year students.

What did you enjoy most about your course?

I thoroughly enjoyed the practical aspect of the course. Time spent on clinical placement not only increased my knowledge and confidence in the field but also my interpersonal and overall social skills.

What have been the highlights of your career to date?

Since graduating I have taken on a research assistant role at the university on an NIHR RfPB project, worked within a busy London NHS Trust and privately as a podiatrist. These different roles provided great insight into the various fields within the profession allowing me to choose the path I would like to take forward.

What advice would you give to a student starting their degree at Southampton?

My advice to students starting their degree is to get involved with the different societies at the University and to attend CPD events during University.

What is it like to be a podiatrist and what do you enjoy most about it?

Being a podiatrist is a rewarding job where you can make a real difference to patient’s wellbeing and quality of life. The most enjoyable moment is being told by a patient that your management plan has led to a significant reduction in their foot pain or problems. As a private podiatrist, one of the best enjoyments is working at times that suit your lifestyle.
