Hi, I'm Lucy Boustred and I studied Bachelor of Midwifery (Hons) within Health Sciences at the University of Southampton.

I’m really happy here. The University has great links with Southampton’s Princess Anne Hospital which is an outstanding hospital to learn in and students are warmly welcomed into the team.

I chose the University of Southampton because it has a good reputation for midwifery. I'd been to the open days and really liked the environment.

Half my time is spent on placement where I've been able to pick up vital skills whilst being able to get stuck into the job straight away.  It's quite an intense course but I've still been able to have the full university experience.

I've been fortunate to experience a wide range of midwifery environments including a neonatal unit, gynaecology ward, high risk postnatal ward, low risk birthing centre and a community role. The mentorship on all my placements has been excellent.

Working in the community attending Doctor's clinics and making home visits has been incredibly rewarding. This is where I'd like to begin working when I graduate, as a community midwife.

Last year the University offered me the opportunity to volunteer in Ghana where I was able to observe maternity care. This has given me the aspiration to practice in different countries such as Hong Kong and New Zealand.

I've opted to do my elective placement this year in Thailand where I'll spend two weeks as a maternity volunteer. I can‘t wait to go!
