Hi, I'm Martin Simpson-Scott and I studied BSc (Hons) Podiatry within Health Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Choosing to study here has proven an excellent decision. I am confident that this university will enhance my resume and my employability.

When I made the decision to return to higher education I didn't want to settle for just any institution.  As a Russell Group University with a growing international reputation for Health Sciences, Southampton fitted the bill perfectly.

Right from the start I felt that that this was not just a degree, but a new career with so many different options for specialising into the future.

There's been so much about the course that I've enjoyed. The opportunity to witness cadaveric anatomy up close, first hand in the anatomy lab, was absolutely brilliant!

The quality of the podiatry placements at Southampton has been fantastic and completely invaluable in preparing me for employment. I've experienced a wide range of settings from very hands-on, practical ‘core podiatry' clinics, to observing podiatric surgery.

The lecturing staff are knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. Our lecturers' doors are always open which is something I have found invaluable during my time here.

As a mature student, with a mortgage and all the bills that go with it, I don't think I would be here if it wasn't for the financial support provided by the NHS.  In receipt of a maintenance bursary, and with tuition fees that are paid by the NHS too, I feel really fortunate.

After graduating I plan to secure a position as a podiatrist within the NHS or work for a private practice. There is such a great diversity of specialisms available in podiatry but its MSK (musculoskeletal) and surgery which are the areas I have particular interest in pursuing.

Beyond this I've always aspired to running my own business. This remains a big goal of mine for the future.

As a vocational degree that affords professional registration, Southampton really does prepare you for a career within a profession that has an exciting future.
