The midwifery selection session has been designed as an opportunity for you to demonstrate your skills, understanding, insight and values of the profession. The session consists of short face to face interview with academic staff and clinicians.

During the day there is plenty of opportunity to ask questions to academic staff, admissions staff and clinicians. We also have an information session with question and answer time, so please come prepared with all your questions. It is a great opportunity for you to find out all you want to know about us, our programmes and student life.

Each session will have a maximum of 16 applicants, we do not have a cap on the number of places we offer in each session but you may be aware that it is a very competitive programme. We evaluate all the evidence you provide and make independent decisions on each applicant.

How to prepare

To prepare for the session you must also read the document below (please click on the following hyperlink)

The NHS Constitution

We expect you to use the session to demonstrate your understanding and insight into the midwifery profession

Please make sure that you read through the checklist of documents you must bring with you and organise a photograph of yourself (as per the checklist).

What to expect

Face to face interview
You will be asked to undertake up to four short interviews with selectors, who will be a member of the Faculty staff, an NHS colleague, senior student, or selected service user. Each interview will normally take between 5 and 10 minutes, each with a different focus, so you have several opportunities to demonstrate your skills, understanding, insight and values of the profession. We suggest that to prepare, you need to have an understanding of women's health and maternity care and be really clear about your desire to become a midwife.

Dress code

You are attending an interview for entry into a professional career and we expect applicants to dress accordingly.

Friends and relatives

Unfortunately we cannot invite relatives or friends into the selection activities but suggest they plan their own activities whilst you are with us. To help them in planning their time, we suggest that each selection session will last approximately 4 hours and there are seating areas which are comfortable for short waits.

Limited free parking is available at our Montefiore Halls, Wessex Lane, postcode SO18 2NU. Please make sure you park in the non-residential section as signposted. From here you will be able to take the Uni-link Bus to the Interchange on Highfield Campus (Uni-link Bus Map). The bus stop is directly outside the entrance gate to the Halls. Tickets can be purchased from the bus driver. A day rider ticket costs £3.70 and entitles you to unlimited travel on any of our Uni-link buses.

When will you hear our decision?

Midwifery is a highly competitive programme at Southampton and we are very limited on the number of offers we can make. We aim to make decisions with in 10 working days of attending a selection day.

You will see this decision immediately in UCAS Track and you will also receive written confirmation from us by e-mail.

We look forward to meeting you on the selection day and wish you every success with your application.
