Three people from Health Sciences have been shortlisted in the Student Nursing Times Awards 2013. Dr Chris McLean is one of seven shortlisted for ‘Lecturer of the Year'; Caroline Avis is one of nine shortlisted for ‘Student nurse of the year: adult'; and Katie Keen is one of just four shortlisted for ‘Student nurse of the year: children'.   We wish them luck at the awards lunch on the 1st May.

A project, supervised by Dr Cheryl Metcalf, which pioneered the use of Xbox computer technology to develop the world's first process that measures hand joint movement to help stroke patients recover manual agility at home, was featured on the 4Tech show on BBC Arabic News. The piece includes an interview with Dr Sara Demain and had a potential audience of 25million people. The piece starts and six minutes and 45 seconds into the programme.

Professor Peter Griffiths comments in the Health Service Journal in an article analysing the rising cost of temporary nursing.  Peter suggests that "Keeping some slack in the system to meet peaks in demand is sometimes the more cost-effective strategy."

Undergraduate medical student, Ivana van der Geest, won a prize of 1,000 Euros for ‘Best Undergraduate Research in Medicine' at the Erasmus Medical Centre.  Ivana conducted her research in the Netherlands with Health Sciences' Dr Anne-Sophie Darlington and Dr van den Heuvel-Eibrink.  She came to Southampton to analyse and write up the results of her study into palliative care for children with cancer.  Dr Darlington supervises Ivana here.
