Congratulations to our education team shortlisted for the International Journal of Palliative Nursing ‘Educator of the Year Award' for its work with practitioners in end of life care and palliative care education work within the Faculty. Much of this work would not have been possible without collaboration between the education and research group. The winner will be announced at a ceremony later in March.

Congratulations to child nursing student Natalie Brown who has been shortlisted in the 2014 Student Nursing Times awards for the 'Student Nurse of the Year: Children' category. We wish Natalie the best of luck for the final in May.

Over 30 Health Sciences students, academics and practise partners celebrated the successful end of a year-long SCPHN programme last week. The event included student presentations and a special staff award. Attendees also welcomed Pauline Watts, Professional Officer for Health Visiting from the Department of Health, who gave a keynote speech on the development of SCPHN.

In this week's issue of the British Journal of Nursing Professor Alan Glasper discusses proposals by the Nursing and Midwifery Council to implement robust systems for ensuring that nurses and midwives are appropriately revalidated.

A warm welcome to Dr Karin Blomberg from the University of Örebro and Dr Yvonne Wengström from the Karolinska Institute who are collaborating with Dr Jackie Bridges on research into compassionate care. Dr Blomberg is visiting our Faculty regularly throughout 2014 to conduct a critical analysis of the concept of compassionate care and to explore the potential for its measurement.
