Applicants to brand new Health Sciences degree offered job taster experience

Published: 21 May 2014

The NHS Thames Valley and Wessex Leadership Academy is offering top UK applicants to the BSc Healthcare: Management, Policy and Research the opportunity to shadow one of its Management Training Scheme trainees for a day.

Shadowing will give potential applicants an opportunity to experience the trainees' working environment helping them gain some work experience in a healthcare setting that will support their application to the undergraduate programme.

The undergraduate programme lasts four years and includes a one year paid work placement which is designed to help students gain essential experience with a prestigious organisation and enhance their career prospects.

It is hoped that the opportunity for keen applicants to shadow a trainee will give them invaluable insight into potential future careers and a basic understanding of the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme (NHS GMTS).

The NHS Thames Valley and Wessex Leadership Academy is just one of the many placement providers partnered to this new Health Sciences degree which is committed to developing employability and management skills.

Our programme is also endorsed by the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme which considers our training excellent preparation for students embarking on this award winning scheme.

Alumni MTS and local lead for the Training Scheme Fiona Rodden said: "This programme is set to be a fantastic foundation for the NHS GMTS. It will give individuals a real insight into NHS management, evidence-based practice, service improvement methodologies and a wide range of other skills that will be incredibly valuable for anyone thinking of joining the NHS.

"In particular the year in industry and encouragement to reflect on practice will ensure that graduates will have a significant advantage in application for any graduate scheme or NHS role."

The opportunity to job shadow will take place in the Thames Valley and Wessex region and can be organised by contacting Dr Jane Prichard by emailing J.S.Prichard@southampton.ac.uk .  The offer will be subject to the applicant showing real interest in the programme and a future career in healthcare.
