A summary of the latest news and intelligence from around the Faculty.

As well as being appointed a dame in the Queen’s Birthday Honours last month, our dean Jessica Corner was also elected chair of the Council of Deans of Health. In a recent article in Times Higher Education(THE), Jessica features in a Q&A about her new role.

Congratulations to Dr Wendy Wigley who has been awarded the title of 'Queen’s Nurse'. The title recognises a continued commitment to improving standards of care in the community and to learning and leadership. Wendy will be awarded with her Queen’s Nurse certificate and badge at a ceremony later in the year.

On Tuesday of this week NICE revealed its guidelines for safe staffing plans for nurses in hospitals. The analysis of research evidence from which these guidelines have been drawn were provided by a reportpublished late in 2012 and led by the Faculty’s Professor Peter Griffiths.The new guidelines have been widely covered in the media.

Undergraduate nursing student, Bethany Walker, who is joining 100 others in a bid to climb Canada’s 3,363 metre Mount Edith Cavell next August, has featured in the Oxford Mail – the paper from the city where Bethany will be starting her nursing career at the John Radcliffe Hospital in September.

Finally…in the next issue of the British Journal of Nursing, Professor Alan Glasper discusses recent initiatives to promote safety in the NHS including a new review of the NHS reporting culture by Sir Robert Francis QC designed to make it easier for NHS staff to speak up when things go wrong.
