Over 250 Health Sciences undergraduate students at the University of Southampton were recognised in the Dean’s List Awards at a special ceremony last week.

The awards are made for exceptional performance by Health Sciences’ students and given to individuals at each level of study on each undergraduate programme including nursing, midwifery, podiatry, occupational therapy and physiotherapy degrees.

‘Exceptional performance’ is considered to be contributions to the learning community as a senior student mentor or student representative; students who receive commendations from practice or patients; achievements within wider University activities; and contributions to professional or student networks, national student bodies or as ambassadors for the Faculty or profession.

Nominations for the awards are made by Health Sciences’ academics and student representatives, and judged by a panel made up of academic staff with support from the SAA team (Student and Academic Administration).

Students attaining a high level of performance (over 70%) across a part or full programme of study, incorporating academic and practice-based assessments, are also awarded.

Successful students also received a certificate and letter from the Dean to go into their portfolio and year 2 students are given the opportunity to shadow a professor or take part in a project in their third year.

Professor Dame Jessica Corner, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, who presented the awards said: “This is a fantastic event to celebrate the individual contributions that our very best performing students have made to the Faculty and to their professions.

“These are the future workforce and change makers in healthcare and it is incredibly important that we recognise and reward their contribution so far, as they move on to the next stages of their career.
