A summary of the latest news and intelligence from around the Faculty.

Over 250 Health Sciences undergraduate students were recognised in the Dean’s List Awards at a special ceremony yesterday. The awards were made for exceptional performance by our students and given to individuals at each level of study on each undergraduate programme.

Congratulations to Dr Alan Borthwick who received a Citation from the Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrists and to Dr Cathy Bowen who received the Meritorious Award of the Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrists. Alan and Cathy received their awards last week at the House of Lords.

The latest RN4CAST study led by Professor Peter Griffiths shows an association between long nursing shifts & overtime with lower quality care. The study has received significant media coverage including Heart FM .

Congratulations to Health Sciences researchers Jacqui Prieto, Cathy Murphy, Mandy Fader and Katherine Moore (a visiting Professor from the University of Alberta in Canada) who have published a Cochrane review on intermittent catheterisation for long-term bladder management.

A collaborative interactive theatre project led by James Wilson involving lecturers, the human library, student nurses and our NHS partner Southern Health, has been nominated as a finalist in ‘ The News Best of Health Awards '. The ceremony will take place on October 17th at the Guildhall in Portsmouth.

Huge congratulations to our 14 nursing students who have just completed a challenging expedition to Malawi that raised over £20,000 for the charity, AMECA . The team made a summit attempt on Mount Mulanje’s Sapitwa peak, the highest peak in Malawi, but their efforts were narrowly thwarted within metres of success due to severe weather conditions.

Following a successful international exchange pilot project in 2013, 37 students and lecturers travelled to Lund University in Sweden this week to engage in another week-long event.

The UK team will be working with Swedish students to explore innovative OT practice with older adults and will culminate in students presenting their investigative findings. You can follow the students’ progress in their blog or on Twitter @SotonLundOT.

In a competitive bid for health education research Julie Wintrup and the Occupational Therapy team have been awarded 20k for a project working with student co-researchers and digital champions to investigate intercultural learning. The research will begin following the Lund trip and will involve students and practitioners working with the academic team.
