Winter Graduation

This first summary of this year of the latest news and intelligence from around the Faculty.

Jane Ball, principle research fellow for NIHR CLAHRC, is quoted in the Health Service Journal in a piece by Shaun Lintern about how nursing staff shortages are fuelling the recruitment of nurses from overseas.

Research by Professor Jonathan Drennan commissioned by the Irish Cancer Society to evaluate its information service has been published in the Irish Times. Professor Drennan’s report found that about 40 per cent of the people who contacted the service had, or were recovering from, cancer.

Our Health Sciences post-graduate research team is pleased to announce the wonderful news of seven more successes in 2014 since the end of July. Four students were awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and three were awarded a Doctor of Clinical Practice (DClinP). .

Congratulations to associate professor of the continence technology and skin health group, Dr David Voegeli, who has recently been successful in bidding to form a new University Strategic Research Group. This is currently entitled The Surface Technology, Decontamination and Antimicrobial Resistance USRG, and will be chaired by Prof Tim Leighton (FEE), with Dr Voegeli as a co-chair.

Further congratulations to Dr Voegeli who has been awarded an IfLS PhD studentship with colleague Dr Xize Niu (FEE) for a three year study: “Droplet based portable continuous chemical sensor”, which links into the team’s recent EPSRC award.

Professor Alan Glasper discusses how children’s nurses can enhance care delivery using pertinent data in the next edition of Issues in Comprehensive Paediatric Nursing.
