A summary of the latest news and intelligence from around the Faculty.

Congratulations to Dr Peter Worsley and Professor Dan Bader, along with Dr Alex Dickinson and Dr Luidi Jiang from the Faculty of Engineering, who were successful in being awarded an IfLS PhD studentship entitled ‘Measuring and simulating soft tissue adaptations following lower limb amputation’. This follows a successful Interdisciplinary Science & Enterprise project led by Worsley and Dickinson which was recently featured in the IfLS annual report.

Prof Dan Bader and Dr Peter Worsley have also recently been awarded NIHR funding to establish a Paediatric Healthcare Technologies Theme along with Professor Howard Clark from the Faculty of Medicine. This project will be run in coordination with The Wound Prevention & Treatment Health Technology Cooperative (Based in Bradford) and the recently formed Medical Devices and Vulnerable Skin Network led by Prof Bader.

Project lead for eAoPP, Pauline Morgan, has been interviewed by the Nursing Times showcasing how Health Sciences is leading the way in electronic assessment of nursing practice.

Congratulations to Drs Priya Khambhaita and Alejandra Recio Saucedo who were successful in securing a £10,000 Annual Adventures in Research Award. The award will be used for a 12 month study entitled ‘Comparing best practice in pathways to breast cancer diagnosis for Indian women in the UK and India’. Dr Debbie Fenlon will be an advisor on the project.

Congratulations to year one OT student representative Elizabeth Heron and colleagues who won £1,500 funding from The University’s Social Innovation Challenge. The funding is to trial a project which tackles social isolation in the elderly population and the psychosocial issue of depersonalisation within healthcare by way of an exchange program which will see current health care students stay with elderly individuals when on placement.

Congratulations to Dr Anne-Sophie Darlington who has received a grant from the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Group (EORTC QLG) to carry out research on the Quality of Life of Teenagers and Young Adults with cancer. The study will be conducted with collaborators in European countries and will focus on quality of life issues of importance to young people and the possible need for a new patient-reported outcome measure.

Congratulations to Dr Lesley Collier who was successful in securing a WUN research development fund of £18,000 with colleagues from the universities of Sydney, Cape Town, Hong Kong and Auckland. The group will be exploring how care partners promote meaningful engagement in activity for older residents with advanced dementia from diverse cultural backgrounds.
