Congratulations to those students and staff that took park in the University’s 13th successful Science and Engineering Day last weekend. Adult & child nursing, mental health, midwifery and healthcare science all took stands at the event and attracted lots of interest from adults and children alike.

Congratulations to Associate Professors Cathy Bowen (PI) and Jo Adams, and Dr Lindsey Cherry, who are part of a prestigious consortium awarded an Arthritis Research UK grant to host the charity’s national internship scheme for graduate nurse and allied health professionals (podiatry, physiotherapy and occupational therapy). The consortium, with Southampton as the lead partner, includes leading international researchers in rheumatology from the Universities of Oxford, Leeds, Salford and the West of England.
These internships will be great opportunities for new graduate nurses and allied health professionals interested in clinical practice and/or research careers in rheumatology, as they will benefit from tremendous UK wide peer support and join a team of internationally renowned rheumatology researchers and expert clinicians. From Cathy’s previous work with interns we know that this opens up much wider opportunities for future research opportunities such as competitive applications for NIHR PhD studentships and engagement with international partners.

Professor Jane Burridge and the Rehabilitation & Health Technologies research group are organising a ‘Discovery Day’ on Thursday, 2nd July in B 45 to publicise its research to a wide audience. A hugely successful similar event was held last year which was covered on regional TV!
The event will continue for a further two days as part of the University Open Days on 3rd and 4th July. All three of the Faculty’s research groups plan to get involved on these days and use the opportunity to showcase its research to potential students.

An exhibition of current occupational therapy student’s art work, entitled ‘Beyond Words’, is currently on view on the fourth floor of the library until 23rd March. The exhibition includes examples of the artists’ books that our first year students produce reflecting the first year of their journey to becoming professional occupational therapists and the experiences this involves.

Associate Professor, Dr Ruth Bartlett, has been interviewed by Indian publication, Healthcare Executive, talking about need for education in complex care in older people. Ruth is quoted as saying: "Healthcare providers need to recognise and respond to frailty in older people and inspire and lead others on initiatives that evolve care systems".
