Health Sciences news roundup

Published: 2 April 2015

Our new film about the recent REF results is now complete and can be viewed both on our website and Youtube channel.

Our Dean, Professor Dame Jessica Corner, has a comment piece published in the RNCi about breaking down old professional boundaries and how our own Faculty’s learning and expertise can add value to NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens’ Five Year Forward View and resulting strategic action plan to transform the NHS. Jessica’s comment piece is also due to be published in the Nursing Standard.

Congratulations to Aimie Bellwood, Chris Bailey, Maggie Donovan-Hall, Trevor Kettle and Jo Watson, who, on the wet and windy morning of Sunday 29th March, completed the inaugural Hampton Court Palace Half Marathon. Conditions were far from ideal, with very strong headwinds in the final section, and the planned post-run picnic had to be abandoned due to the weather, but they were all very pleased with their achievements on the day.

The Bachelor of Nursing team will be presenting two papers at this year’s NET (networking for education in healthcare) conference, both of which are about our work enhancing knowledge and skills with regard to the care of vulnerable people. Kevin Humphrys is presenting a paper on his e-learning resource on Autism, and Kim Bezzant is presenting on our ‘safeguarding rotation’ placement for final year students.

Professor Alan Glasper successfully ran a student session at the first London Nurse Show in Alexandra Palace, organised by the British Journal of Nursing, on ‘Turning your essay into an article: 11 steps for structuring your academic paper’.

Finally… Professor Alan Glasper writes in his regular discussion piece in the British Journal of Nursing about the parameters of Lord Willis’s recommendations following his review of the future education and training of registered nurses and healthcare assistants.
