Congratulations to the FoHS Players 2015 who were nominated as ‘commended’ in the ‘Hearing the patients voice’ category in the Wessex SHINE awards. The team produced a piece of theatre based on a service user story. Using an electronic audience response system (zappers/clickers) they presented a ‘choose your own adventure’ style of interactive theatre where the audience voted on the direction of the play at pre-selected choice points. The project was led by James Wilson in collaboration with the human library, students and NHS staff.

Members of the collaboration were nominator Ian Douglas (Integrated Senior Clinical Lead, Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust); James Wilson (Health Sciences lecturer); Hermione Bailey (Human library); and volunteer Health Sciences students Abby Gillett, Jade Sedgeman, Lucy Franklin, Laura Petty, Shaun Joy and Lavinia White.

The team will be presented with their Award as part of the Health Education Wessex Annual Conference later in October.

Following earlier news from the roundup that Professor Peter Griffiths will lead a study to investigate how the provision of nurses in hospitals affects the care and safety of patients, the story has been featured in the Daily Echo.

A study led by Jane Ball, principle research fellow, for NIHR CLAHRC Wessex, and involving Professor Peter Griffiths, about the rise in potentially risky 12 –hour shifts amongst nursing staff, has been covered by the Nursing Times and the Health Service Journal. The CLAHRC is now exploring shift-work and shift patterns further thanks to CLAHRC funding for postgraduate research student, Chiara Dall’Ora.

The research was undertaken by the National Nursing Research Unit (NNRU) at King’s College London in collaboration with the University of Southampton and RN4Cast Consortium.
