Nursing at Southampton ranks top ten in the world for second year running
Nursing at Southampton has risen to 9th in the world according to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World Rankings by Subject 2018.
It is the second year that Southampton’s Nursing provision has been named in the global top ten, continuing a three-year rising trajectory of performance. Southampton sits among three UK institutions featured in this group.
Two years ago it was ranked 14th in the world, climbing to 10th last year, and rising a further place this year. Nursing’s excellent performance is powered by a high reputational rating amongst academic peers around the world (87.7 out of 100) and very high scores for research citations (95.2 out of 100) and ‘h-index’ (91.9 out of 100) which measures the productivity and impact of work published by scientists and scholars in the subject.
Dean of Health Sciences Professor Mandy Fader said: It’s fantastic to see that our commitment to excellence in nursing education and research is reflected in this latest QS World Ranking. Our nursing research is having far-reaching impact across the globe from influencing policy in cancer care and survivorship to influencing practice in preventing pressure ulcers using innovative technologies.”
The QS rankings reflect internationally-recognised indicators of excellence to rate and rank the world’s leading universities. This year’s results continue to build on the University’s strong showing in the QS subject rankings last year, driven by Southampton’s continually improving academic reputation.

Nursing leads a group of five subjects across the University of Southampton that are ranked in the top 50 globally. These are:
- Archaeology, 29th
- Earth Sciences, 36th
- Mining Engineering, 42nd
- Geography, 46th
For the first time, the University of Southampton also cracked the top 100 in two of the five broad subject areas covered by QS, rising to 95th in both Life Sciences and Medicine and Natural Sciences.
Last year, Southampton ranked 102nd amongst institutions overall in the QS World University Rankings, placing 18th amongst UK universities ranked.
