This summer in support of the 70th birthday of the NHS, students from the School of Health Sciences organised and hosted their own celebration to mark the anniversary.

Called the NHS Big 7Tea students arranged a number of activities comprising afternoon tea, live music, charity raffle, nostalgic slide presentation looking back at the history of Health Sciences and its relationship with the NHS over the years, ‘Guess the Academic’ challenge and photo corner complete with selfie frames.

Student Faculty Officer and Nursing student Jess was instrumental in organising the event. She explains why the NHS is so close to her and her fellow students’ hearts:

“The NHS is one of the greatest things we as a country have, it’s world leading and wonderful. However, it is struggling and we not only need a huge injection of cash but we also need an injection of staff. If you’re reading this, please check out the #NHS70 on Twitter to see what our colleagues up and down the country have been doing to celebrate our NHS – I’m hoping this will inspire you to get more involved and maybe consider a career change and join us!“

Academics and students from Health Sciences attended the event including Deputy Head of School (Education), Professor Anne Baileff:

“It’s a testament to the passion and commitment of our fantastic students across Health Sciences that they’ve created their own celebration in honour of this important milestone in the history of our National Health Service.”

Taking place at the University’s Hartley Suite the event raised just under £100 for Hampshire and IOW Air Ambulance and the Centre for Cancer Immunology Southampton charities.
