Sunshine celebrations for Health Science graduates at the University of Southampton
The sun shone on Southampton’s Health Science students as they celebrated receiving their degrees at Summer Graduation 2019.
Friends and family cheered and applauded as their loved ones went on stage at the Nuffield Theatre or Turner Sims Concert Hall in front of the academics who had taught them. All received certificates or prizes to recognise years of hard work.
BSc Occupational Therapy graduate Tom Dunstan says: “We had up to two placements every year. I had two in mental health settings, one with adults and one with adolescents, another in a community rehab team and the fourth in a hospital. They were very varied and gave me tremendous experience of the profession and the confidence to enter all kinds of practice.”
Charlotte Barber graduated with a postgraduate Masters in Midwifery. She says: “In addition to my placements, I also got the chance to get involved in research. That’s so important as it moves our profession on and will improve the care we give women. I must also emphasise how much I appreciated the pastoral and academic support during my studies.”
For many of the graduates, this was their last opportunity to get together with all their classmates before heading out into the world to embark on their careers.
Dean of Environmental and Life Sciences, Professor Rachel Mills says: “Graduation is one of my favourite events at the University of Southampton. We get to celebrate all the hard work and achievements of our newest graduates with their families and friends and to wish them every success throughout their lives.”
