Nursing at Southampton continues to be top 5 in QS world subject rankings
Nursing and Midwifery at Southampton has been placed 5th in the world for the second successive year and moved up from third to second place amongst UK Universities ranked in this subject area.
Professor Mandy Fader, Head of the School of Health Sciences, has expressed enormous pride in Nursing and Midwifery at Southampton maintaining its status in the world’s top five for a second year whilst also achieving a rise to second amongst UK universities ranked – especially as 2020 is designated the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife. She also emphasised the importance of teamwork in securing the University’s success in this vital field of study and research.
“Our outstanding result comes from our highly skilled staff being dedicated to bringing research and education together as closely as possible to bring about changes in healthcare,” said Professor Fader. “Our success is all about teamwork. Our brilliant staff include not only nurses and midwives, but allied health professionals and experts from diverse fields such as engineers, social scientists and economists. We strongly believe that bringing together the power of these different perspectives is the best way to transform the quality and effectiveness of health care services and patient care.
“From creating compassionate learning cultures in dementia care to developing innovative technologies to prevent pressure ulcers we are tackling some of the toughest global challenges in health,” Professor Fader continued. “Our Macmillan Survivorship Research Group is finding ways to help people with cancer live longer and richer lives and our ‘Genie’ technology is combatting loneliness in people of all ages through developing their social networks. Our NIHR-funded Applied Research Centre is a powerful engine for working in partnership with health providers across the Wessex region and our research impacts globally and nationally on key policy issues such as safe nurse staffing levels.”
Dr Julie Cullen, the University’s Head of Nursing, Midwifery and Health in the School of Health Sciences added: “Maintaining our place as fifth in the world and moving up to be second in the UK for Nursing and Midwifery is a tremendous achievement for all our students, staff and the Healthcare Providers who offer students clinical placements to prepare for their academic degree and professional registration.
“We all work together to support students to succeed as compassionate, competent practitioners to deliver and lead future healthcare,” Dr Cullen continued. “The QS ranking is a reflection of our Nursing and Midwifery academic and employer reputation, citations, Faculty and student ratio, and International Faculty and student ratio. I would personally like to say thank you to every member of the wider team including the Professional Service staff who have played a part in this achievement.”
