Event details
In association with the Faculty of Health Sciences and the charity The AMECA Trust.
AMECA's patron, Tim Butcher, is an award-winning journalist, broadcaster and best-selling author. Tim's first book, Blood River, is an account of his epic journey through the Congo to unravel the region's turbulent history. It was an international bestseller and translated into six languages. Tim capped that by trekking 350 miles through Liberia for his second book, Chasing the Devil, inspired by Graham Greene's whisky-steeped wanderings through Africa.
As a journalist Tim specialised in awkward places at awkward times, reporting for the Daily Telegraph, the BBC and a host of international publications on conflict in eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. In 2010 he received an Honorary Doctorate for service as a writer.
The AMECA Trust was founded by Ruth Markus as an enduring legacy to the memory of her son, Dr Alex Coutselos.
The charity has established a fully sustainable hospital wing in Malawi and is currently embarking on its second project to build a rural healthcare clinic in southern Malawi.
