Tuning Canada with Europe

Senior lecturer in Nursing, Dr Mary Gobbi, recently returned from Canada where she participated in the Canada-EU Tuning Project, an initiative to investigate the alignment of academic standards and reference points in higher education for Canada and the European Union

Co-led by the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) and the EU, the Canada-EU Tuning Project aims to develop more transparency between higher education systems in Canada and the European Union and to establish a foundation for the development of a shared understanding and terminology for Canadian and European higher education stakeholders in their approaches to curriculum development, standards, qualifications frameworks and quality assurance.

During the seven day visit, Mary visited the Universities of York, (Toronto), Laval (Quebec), Dalhousie (Nova Scotia), Edmonton, Alberta and Regina (Saskatchewan). Mary's role was to gain a detailed understanding of the way the different provinces in Canada develop their licensed, registered and advanced practice nurses. A particular focus of the visit was the factors that inhibit or enable mobility within Canada and to make comparisons with the EU with respect to international mobility to and from EU/Canada.

Mary is coordinator of the Tuning subject area group of Nursing and has been a member of the Tuning Management Committee since 2003.  In this role she continues to provide expert advice concerning proposed changes to the EU Directive 2005/36./EC as it relates to the education of general nurses (adult field).
