Peer facilitated study groups

Peta Reid in Bio Behavioural Health in Academic Unit 1: Professional Practice in Health Sciences has developed a programme of peer facilitated study groups introduced for nurses and midwives in the Faculty.

This programme, based on Supplemental Instruction, enables enthusiastic year three students to help year one students to meet the Life Sciences module learning outcomes. The student facilitators have demonstrated both high academic achievement in life sciences theory and the ability to link this to clinical practice.

First year students are being expertly guided through activities focused on the module content by their third year student facilitators. Participation as a facilitator requires a day of training in the facilitator role which we are confident will enhance CVs and the students' future roles as educators in practice.

The facilitator role simultaneously supports the focus of the third year students' final placements on leadership and management. Peta's innovative development means that theory and practice bridges are being built for both first and third years and so far is proving to be popular with both groups.
