Transformation of Health Sciences at Southampton General Hospital

Gloomy narrow corridors, pokey rooms and horrible carpet characterised the Health Sciences area at Southampton General until recently. But no more. After a 3 year planning and gestation period and seemingly impossible barriers (e.g. the lease) the new Health Sciences Clinical Academic Facility has finally burst open.

Previously reminiscent of a 1970s GP surgery our new reception provides a much more imposing and colourful welcome. The large open plan office has desks for up to 16 PGR students and hot desks for 8 visiting lecturers with the new ‘Fetch’ system which allows all regular staff to have their own portable ‘mini-office’. There are small ‘interview’ rooms for peace and quiet, seeing students and making long phone calls and two visiting academic offices.

A cluster of offices house the professors (Mandy Fader, Dan Bader and Alison Richardson) and at the rear of the Facility a large office has been designated for 4-5 post-doctoral fellows together with single offices for other senior staff. Next door the new biomechanical laboratory will soon be equipped with state-of- the- art equipment for the Continence Technology and Skin Health team.

We have converted one of the small classrooms into a seminar/meeting room with a large table for up to 12 people and have a more informal meeting/relaxation room for staff to gather. There is also a student room complete with snooker and bar football and food machines for Health Sciences and Medicine students.  All of this, together with a general refurbishment of the learning environments (class rooms), provides a revitalised atmosphere within which to both teach and learn.

The new Facility will form the ‘hub’ of our growing Clinical Academic careers programme which brings together clinicians from neighbouring (and more distant) Trusts who are combining their clinical roles with research aligned to our programmes. We will be making a splash with a ‘grand’ opening later in the year but in the meantime we look forward to welcoming you to the new facility – please be sure to come and say hello when you come to visit.
