The Centre for Innovation and Leadership in Health Sciences welcomed over 70 delegates from the UK and Ireland to a Safe and Effective Nurse Staffing Symposium in late October. The highly successful Symposium included experts in safe staffing from the UK, the US, New Zealand and Ireland and discussed a variety of issues related to the challenges of ensuring safe and effective nurse staffing in healthcare.

Presentations delivered included safe nurse staffing and nurse education, the patient’s view of safe staffing, international evidence on safe nurse staffing, economics and nurse staffing, safe nurse staffing in A&E, the policy and politics of safe staffing, developments in safe staffing in Ireland, and the challenges of safe nurse staffing.

Speakers included Professor Dame Jessica Corner, Jane Ball, Professor Peter Griffiths and Professor Jonathan Drennan from the University of Southampton. The keynote speaker was Professor Linda Aiken, the Director of the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research, and the Leadership Professor of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.

Professor Aiken conducts research on the health care workforce and quality of healthcare in the U.S. and globally. The Safe Staffing Symposium is one of a series of events planned by the Centre for Innovation and Leadership in Health Sciences to highlight the work of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Southampton.

The next event is entitled Everyday Ethical Dilemmas in Healthcare: Power, Politics and Practices and will be held on 10th May 2016. Further details on attending the event can be found here.
