Research project: A non-pharmacological supportive care intervention for patients with lung cancer and their caregivers in the management of the respiratory distress symptom cluster - Dormant - Dormant

Currently Active:

Cancer of the lung is a common cancer and can cause lots of symptoms. We know that patients with cancer of the lung have many symptoms including cough, tiredness, shortness of breath, depression and anxiety, and that many of these symptoms are not alleviated as well as they should be. It is known that when patients attend a group over a few weeks, this helped them to better manage shortness of breath. This study will focus on a group of symptoms that seems to be present at the same time, including shortness of breath, cough and fatigue.

This study will use a mixed method approach to explore the theory and modelling aspects of the development of an intervention, following the MRC Framework for Complex Interventions.

This will include synthesis of evidence and exploration of experiences and perceptions of effective symptom management approaches and strategies and coping with symptoms via qualitative interviews with patients and caregivers at different stages of the illness trajectory, and focus groups with practitioners working with lung cancer patients. This will be supplemented with a Discrete Choice Experiment using patients and carers to select components of the intervention which will be relevant to them, appropriate, useful and preferred. When these aspects of the intervention have been developed, a training manual will be developed in preparation for a feasibility trial.
