Charlotte (Lotty) Brooks is an occupational therapy lecturer. Charlotte delivers a range of teaching sessions and leads modules on topics such as cancer, palliative care, health literacy, and research. Charlotte conducts research on topics such as cancer related fatigue, health literacy and self-management. Charlotte has primarily conducted qualitative research. Charlotte has been involved in developing digital interventions using research methods. Charlotte works clinically with the OT Practice. Prior to these roles, Charlotte worked as a Macmillan cancer rehabilitation lead and worked in a variety of other research and clinical roles.

It is important to empower patients to access, understand and use health information to take control of their healthcare.

Charlotte also completed a clinical academic doctoral research fellowship. This involved using qualitative methodology to identify the facilitators and barriers to meeting older adults’ health literacy needs in clinical practice. Health literacy is about patients’ ability to access, understand and use information for health. Charlotte is an occupational therapist and obtained a BSc degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Southampton in 2011. Charlotte believes in the importance of developing clinically relevant research, with a focus on enhancing the quality and effectiveness of healthcare provision.

Research interests

Health literacy, cancer rehabilitation and survivorship, self-management, decision making and decision aids.

PhD research

Supervised by: Prof Jo Adams, Dr Claire Ballinger and Prof Don Nutbeam

Thesis title: Facilitators and barriers to meeting the needs of and development of health literacy in an older adult population

  • Qualitative interviews with older adults and focus groups with healthcare professionals
  • Completed in May 2016

Research projects

  • Current: RCOT Constance Owens grant – exploring the impact of cancer related fatigue on occupational performance and engagement
  • Developing cancer rehabilitation and survivorship services and evaluating how well cancer rehabilitation and survivorship is embedded within the curricula
  • YoDA BRCA: Development and pilot testing of a web-based Genetic Testing Decision Aid for young women newly diagnosed with early stage breast cancer
  • Doctoral thesis: Exploring the facilitators and barriers to meeting older adults’ health literacy needs in clinical practice
