Elizabeth studied Sociology and Social Policy at the University of York, where she developed a keen interest in sociology of health and illness, having always been fascinated by relationships between patients, their family members, health professionals and health systems.

A mixed methods collaborative PhD involving Sociology and Chronobiology at the University of Surrey followed, considering how partnered female nurses with children manage night shifts within the context of family relationships and gendered expectations.

After two years in the Development & Evaluation team at Samaritans Central Office, Elizabeth began working at the University of Southampton in April 2010. She has conducted research concerning cancer services, end of life care and self-management, including the needs of family carers.
