Sally Wheelwright is a Senior Research Fellow in the Macmillan Survivorship Research Group (MSRG) in Health Sciences at the University of Southampton. She is data lead for the MSRG, Chief Investigator on a project to develop a patient decision aid for people with motor neurone disease (DiAMoND) and leads work concerned with supporting people with cancer to self-manage nutrition (MONICA). Sally is an Executive Committee member of the European Organisation of Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Group (EORTC) and involved in several projects to develop quality of life measures.

Supporting people affected by cancer and life limiting conditions to maximise their quality of life underlies all my research.

After graduating from Cambridge University with a natural sciences degree (experimental psychology), Sally spent a year working on reading development in children followed by many years working at the Autism Research Centre in Cambridge with Professor Simon Baron-Cohen on a wide variety of projects. In 2010, a move to the South Coast led to a change in career direction when she joined Medicine at the University of Southampton. Sally co-ordinated the development and validation of quality of life instruments, funded by the European Organisation for the Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) and also embarked on a PhD. Her PhD focussed on the development and preliminary testing of a small group psychoeducational intervention for patients with cancer cachexia and their carers.

Sally joined the Macmillan Survivorship Research Group (MSRG) in Health Sciences in 2017 to work on large longitudinal cohort studies, including CREW, HORIZONS and TrueNTH Global Registry, which explore the recovery of health and wellbeing following cancer. She has an interest in supporting people with cancer and life limiting conditions to self-manage their nutrition (DiAMoND and MONICA). Sally is Co-Chair of the Project and Module Development Committee of the EORTC Quality of Life Group and a member of the National Cancer Research Institute Living With and Beyond Cancer Methodology Group.
