Welcome to Nursing Day Preparation

We are looking forward to seeing you again on Friday 23 March.

In order for you to get the most out of this day, we would like you to undertake a small amount of preparatory work before the event.

Life Sciences Taster Seminar

As part of this event you will attend a Life Sciences taster seminar. You will need to come prepared to this seminar. In the useful downloads section below you will find a journal article entitled, ‘Basic science behind the cardiovascular benefits of exercise’. Parts of the paper are difficult to read but the overall message is clear. Do not be anxious if you do not understand all the paper, we will not be testing you on your understanding! The aim of this session is to give you a better insight into the types of journal articles you will be reading, to gain a feel of what self-directed learning can be like, to understand the benefits of peer learning and support and importantly realise that all students find some learning challenging.

Whilst you are reading the article, please consider the following:

  1. Which parts of the heart most benefits from exercise?
  2. Why is an increased stroke volume and reduced heart rate healthy?
  3. Why is it important for the heart to be able to grow new cells?
  4. Nitric oxide (NO) is important for good flow in blood vessels. Why is good blood flow healthy?
  5. When nurses are discussing the importance of exercise for health, what sort of exercise should they recommend?
