Hi, I am Sarah Tipping and currently studying Adult Nursing at the University of Southampton.

The University of Southampton is ranked as one of the top universities for studying nursing, therefore it easily grabbed my attention. The more I looked into the university the more I realized what incredible support, teaching and opportunities Southampton offers student nurses, which is why I chose to come to Southampton.

Why I chose to be a nurse. I want to use my time to help others, and I am also extremely interested in the biology behind the human body. For me, nursing is the perfect combination of learning biological processes and getting to know patients, their lives, their stories and helping and caring for others.

Studying at the University of Southampton is incredible. There is brilliant teaching, a wonderful campus, a library bigger than I ever knew possible and best of all I have grown to love all the students that make Southampton such an exciting university.

The University has plenty of diverse, well equipped facilities around campus. From the extensive range of resources the library offers, to the swimming pool and large gym, and even some more unusual facilities such as martial arts rooms, bouldering walls and squash courts. The university has something to offer everybody, all in great condition and easy to use.

For me high points so far has to be the placements they can send us on. Southampton can send student nurses to anywhere in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. I was lucky enough to be placed on the Isle of Wight for my last placement, and no other universities can offer this fantastic opportunity of experiencing the Isle of Wight NHS trust.

I was terrified to go on placement for the first time in January of first year. However, this fear was easily settled when I met my lovely mentor and the rest of the friendly nursing team whom I would be working with. They made my first placement extremely enjoyable and taught me so much.

The aspect I enjoy most about my course is learning the theory behind the things we do in practice, therefore we can fully understand why we apply the practices we do, with theory and evidence based research supporting our actions.

The city of Southampton has a brilliant range of shops in the West Quay shopping centre, many diverse eateries, an extensive night life and many open spaces and parks which gives the city a more friendly, ‘green’ feel to it, which I love.
